Caries prophylaxis from the very beginning
Caries-free milk teeth are the best prerequisite for a permanent healthy dentition. The milk tooth must serve as place holders – partially until the age of 12 years - for the permanent teeth. Therefore the parents bear a great responsibility: they have to take care for the dental care of the child during the first two years and guide them properly.
The dental care begins after the eruption of the lower central incisors. The best way to clean these tiny teeth, is to brush them with a cotton swab and a little bit of fluoridated toothpaste.
After the eruption of the lateral incisors, you can brush the teeth with a soft toothbrush and a little bit (at most pea-sized) of fluoridated toothpaste. The parents should take care of their children not swallowing the toothpaste, as they still have to learn to spit. As the molars erupt, the children are allowed to brush their teeth on their own – twice a day and still under guidance of the parents.
